Restoring Nature's Services - Urban Forestry

North East Trees develops urban forestry solutions for agencies, other organizations and communities and neighborhoods within a Sustainable Urban Ecosystem Management (SUEM—pronounced “swim”) framework that maximize the net environmental benefits of protecting and enhancing the urban forest resource.

This Program starts with the premise that people are the most important resource within communities to advocate for and educate decision-makers about the needs of the Urban Forest.  People are also the ultimate stewards of the Urban Forest. In support of this belief, NET provides planning and communications solutions that enable community based organizations and community leaders to better work with municipal resource managers to more effectively improve the performance of the Urban Forest. Specific program elements include:  strategic planning, community outreach, stakeholder facilitation, public education and training, work force development, development of tree planting and care guidelines, tree surveys, tree planting and care training and implementation, tree species selection, tree procurement, grant writing and, of course, tree planting.

North East Trees views trees as the primary engine for the implementation of its Mission:  “To restore nature’s services in resource challenged communities, through a collaborative resource development, implementation and stewardship process”.  The purpose is to improve the quality of life in neighborhoods.  Nature – Green Infrastructure - used to provide much of the services that are now provided by “Gray Infrastructure”.  Providing more Green Infrastructure begins with planting trees and providing better spaces for trees to flourish.  It begins with local residents deciding that trees are important.  North East Trees believes that planting and caring for trees is a logical way for people to engage each other for the purpose of Community Stewardship.  People will plant trees and people will care for and nurture these trees.  They will need to reach out to others within their neighborhoods and communities to do so.  Through its Creating Community One Tree at a Time Initiative, North East Trees helps develop resources for neighborhoods and communities so that these trees will truly become a functioning urban forest that can provide the environmental and other quality of life benefits that are so badly needed.
