North East Trees, in collaboration with The Urban Studio and The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) employed local youth to teach their neighbors about energy efficiency and water conservation. With stakeholder involvement, our youth team collaborated with NET design-build experts to transform the grounds of the LA Wellness Station into a place for the community to enjoy, a model of landscaping best practice. Pueblo del Rio is a public housing development located within Council District 9.

Project Elements included:

  • Local hire for six Pueblo del Rio youth

  • Three youth training workshops that built participants' confidence and knowledge about energy and water conservation.

  • Six public youth-led workshops and the distribution of practical information in English and Spanish

  • Free fruit and shade trees for community members

  • An extensive LA Wellness Station renovation including replacing 1,384 sq feet of water intensive turf with 166 California native trees and plants.

City of Los Angeles residents can access LADWP assistance programs and information about water and energy efficiency programs.
