Ramona Gardens Green Connections Project

Community driven park design and urban forestry

Location: Ramona Gardens Housing Development

Timeline: 2018 - 2023

Funded by: California Natural Resources Agency, Urban Greening Program, California Climate Investments. Additional support from SoCalGas and the University of Southern California

Project Partners: Housing Authority of City of LA, Legacy LA, Ramona Gardens Resident Advisory Committee

The Ramona Gardens Green Connections Project will plant hundreds of trees and California native plants at Ramona Gardens, a Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles public housing site. The new plants and other improvements will enhance the landscape’s beauty for residents and encourage safe paths of travel to local schools, parks, transportation centers, activity centers, and shopping areas. The project will create a tranquil green open space in Henry Alvarez Park (also known as La Loma), which will improve air and water quality, create safe green walking paths to nearby amenities, improve public health, and improve quality of life for residents at Ramona Gardens.

Project elements include:

  • 80 trees planted at Ramona Gardens to help improve air quality, shade buildings in order to reduce air conditioning costs, and provide natural beauty

  • 300 trees planted along nearby residential paths of travel to create safe green walking connections through the community

  • Community outreach and engagement (i.e. design workshops, tree care events)

  • Local hire of NET youth crew, and part time hire of local Ramona Gardens residents

  • Installation of raingardens and bioswales to capture and filter rainwater

  • Design and construction of a concrete access ramp compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, in order to improve access and increase use of the Henry Alvarez Park by the community.

  • Installation of a water efficient, retrofitted irrigation system

  • Installation of a new walking path to improve access and circulation within the park and to better connect it to the neighborhood

  • Installation of benches

  • Installation of educational interpretive signage
